Wrong Stride

A few days ago while walking in the park, I saw a family making joyful noises because their baby had learnt how to walk. It was exciting to watch especially because I am eager to see my 10 month old son hit that milestone. ( My phone battery is fully charged, cameras are on! Ready to capture the moment) Back to the park, a few moments later, the cheers turned into wails! The baby was quickly heading towards the lake, they had to rush and pick her up.

Sometimes it’s not just about making strides, the direction of the strides matter too. It was a great thing for the baby to walk, but tragic if she walked right into the lake.

Jonah made huge strides while trying to run away from God. Instead of heading to Nineveh, he choose to head to Tarshish. Jonah 1:3 says, “But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.” The guy was determined! He was making great strides thinking he can hide from God and have his way. But no, he found himself praying to the same God he was running away from, while in the fish’s belly.

Today you may be making strides in that relationship, but ask yourself, are you heading the right direction? Maybe you have even planned for the wedding, everything is set; but are you just about to fall into a lake? You may be making strides in your career, in your business, in your life; maybe you have even paid the fare and you are boarding the boat. Take a minute and ask yourself “ I’m I headed the right direction?” Is this the direction God has instructed me to go?

God is so gracious and merciful, it doesn’t matter whether you are at Joppa, whether you have paid the fare, maybe you are already in the belly of the fish. It doesn’t matter how far you are in the wrong direction. You can call on God now, He will hear you. He will answer you. He will redirect you.

Today I pray for courage. Courage to walk in the right direction. Even when redirection means starting a new. So help us Lord.
