My husband once took me to a party that we were both excited about, but he forgot to give me one important notice: The dress code. To him it doesn’t mean much, but for me, I would have at least tried to comply. All the guests were dressed formally, all themed red white and black. I showed up in a yellow hoodie and grey sweat pants! We were so misplaced that we left early. The right dress code would have saved our faces, we would have been more confident and enjoyed the party.
Many of my friends are very particular with how they show up! They are careful to be dressed the right way, whether in church, whether in a party, at family functions and even for work. In fact, when invited, they ask, ‘what is the dress code?’ and some of them go shopping for the particular dress in the suggested colour. No one wants to be the odd one out, no one wants to appear out of place. That’s why when someone is seen in a swimming pool fully clothed with a heavy trench coat, they look ridiculous. If someone shows up in church in a swimming costume, the ushers will use any piece of cloth around them to cover them. So showing up in the right dress code is very important.
God gives us a dressing code too. Sadly most of us are not bothered as we wake up each day and don’t even bother to put it on. In the spiritual realm, we sometimes walk naked. Exposing ourselves to the enemy, exposing ourselves to ridicule and sin. Lets take a look at the dress code:
“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:13-17
Yes, each day we need to be prepared spiritually; we need to be suited up! We cannot stand without the armor of God, we cannot survive in this world spiritually naked! One preacher said, this armor of God is suitable for all ages and fits all shapes and sizes, so go ahead and put it on! The Bible does not say ‘if the enemy comes’ it says ‘when the enemy comes’ this means that the devil will show up anyway, he is expected to show up, and woe unto us when we are found naked.
Does it bother you when you walk around naked? As a child of God who has not put on the full armor of God, you look spiritually ridiculous and out of place. You are vulnerable and exposed. So please wake up and suit up!
May the Lord help us all, to always have the right dress code, so that we live fulfilled lives and walk in the purpose He created us for. May we always be found with the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shield of faith, helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit. Because our lives depend on it!
