Where is God in All These?

Yesterday I spent some time online after the news that the first case of corona virus had been confirmed in Kenya. Well there was a lot of online panic, everyone sharing ‘expert’ information on the virus. A cloud of hopelessness mixed with anger covered social media. My mind was a bit clogged, all I could say was ‘Have mercy on us Lord’ My solution was to go offline and get some fresh air outside. I went to a nearby store to buy a few things, only to meet shoppers buying sanitizers, toilet paper and food in bulk. I also noticed that a few prices had already escalated . The seriousness of the epidemic hit me. I started thinking of the countries that had been affected and how severe it was. Walking back home, I had another phrase on my mind, ‘Where is God in all these?’

I could not imagine that our loving God would let us panic and suffer, yet He has authority to speak a word and the virus disappears. When I got back to the house, I continued playing a sermon I had been listening to that morning, and coincidentally the preacher was talking bout Job. Right there, I started thinking, ‘In the midst of this epidemic, God is exactly where He was when job went through all that pain: God is present’ He does not panic when we do, He does not smile when we are in pain. He is here with us. However, he does not work on our terms; He desires that when we don’t understand what is happening around us, we should surrender to the sovereignty of His will.

We cannot guilt trip God, making Him feel bad and change the situation for us to feel good. We cannot bribe him with pretense. He knows our hearts. So when we gather around asking, ‘where is God? does He really care?’ it doesn’t change His mind. John 6:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” His peace is greater than the troubles of this world. When trouble comes, it is not time to question God’s power but to depend on Him and keep trusting that He knows and He cares. We don’t have to comprehend everything. While on earth, we see dimly, but then, face to face. Now in part, but then, we will know fully. He has not revealed everything to man, but has assured us that we will never walk alone.

God is aware of the virus. He is not absent. Let us find assurance in His presence. Even in the valley of the shadow of death, let us not be afraid for the Lord is with us. May His rod and staff comfort us. Choose to believe. He has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.

Amen.
