Where Are You?

Growing up, my siblings and I used to get excited wherever my dad came home for the weekend. We would run towards him chanting ‘dad is home!’, take his bag and walk with him to the house, swinging on his legs and telling him all that happened during the week. We always looked forward to having him around; he came with gifts and also ‘protected’ us from our very strict mother.

One day, I had not performed well in my exams, I was not looking forward to seeing dad; he would be very disappointed. He always encouraged me to stop playing and talking too much in class and study instead. This Friday when dad showed up, I did not run to him, I was afraid, I hid in my room. Dad walked in the house and asked for me; he already knew where I was and why I was hiding. He did not scold me; I got gifts just like my siblings and we talked about my exam results later on. It was not as bad as I had imagined. I learnt that failing exams does not make me less of his child.

We sometimes act in the same way with God: When we have lived right and honoured Him, it is very easy for us to run to Him, talk to Him and serve Him. But when we sin, we get disconnected; we tend to ‘hide’ from Him. Sometimes we are foolish enough to think that ‘not going to church, not praying and reading God’s word is hiding from Him.’ We forget that God knows not only where we are, but also why we are ‘hiding’. He also knows that the only comfort and mercy we need is in Him.

It started with Adam and Eve, after eating the forbidden fruit; they tried hiding from God, in the garden. ‘Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” (Genesis 24:8-9) Guilt was causing them to hide. God knew where they were and why they were hiding. It is rather a question of position. ‘Where are you in relationship to God?’ He wanted them to be restored through His mercy and forgiveness. I believe that if God wanted to destroy them they would vanish immediately after eating the fruit. But He is a merciful God. He still is: That is why He gave his only son Jesus, to come and free us from the bondage of sin.

Is sin causing you to hide? Are you running away from the only place where there is no condemnation? God is calling you; ‘WHERE ARE YOU?’ He knows your location, your position and your condition. He wants you to examine your heart and go back to Him for restoration. Through the blood of Jesus we are saved and freed. Come out of your hiding today. Whatever you have done has not made you less of God’s child.
