Recently, I posted a video on my Facebook page talking about a prayer book that saved my prayer life. At a time when I was going through so much, learning how to balance everything in life, always tired and worried. I bought a book in the streets on my way home, thinking it’s just another book, will read it get two or three things from it and shelve it. But this book ‘Prayers That Avail Much’ changed my life. When I think about that season, I know that God was behind my buying that book. I did not have words of my own, I read prayers daily.
I also spent so much time on traffic going to work, hence more time with my book and Bible. Every time I boarded the bus I put on my headphones and started reading. I used to know which page has which prayer. I even had my favourite. At times I heard people talk about how bad it is to read the Bible while on traffic jam, how you need to have your own words when praying. All I could say was, ‘you have no idea what you are talking about.’ Some people are not as alert as you are early in the morning. Some have no words at all, only tears. Some are only alone when on the bus heading to work, because of the babies at home who take all the attention. For me, whatever works should be used. Even if it means reading prayers every morning until you find your own words. What works for others might not work for you, it is hypocritical to do things that have no impact for you, but makes you look good.
God tells us to pray at all times, without ceasing. He doesn’t say, you must pray only in church. He doesn’t say, your prayers must be loud, He doesn’t say you must pray for five hours a day. He says, pray at all times, and since He perceives all our thoughts from a far, He is able to hear the silent prayers we make while walking, He knows our desires and He is faithful to grant them. If prayer walking is what works for you, go for it. If you have a book like mine, go for it, if you are in a position to kneel every morning and pray, please do. If you go to church for prayer services, well and good! If in this season you need someone to hold your hand and pray with you. Great! No matter how, keep praying, at all times. People will come up with ten best ways to pray, ten best times to pray, but they don’t understand you. Do it your way, grow your way. As long as you keep doing it. As you pray, believe that you have received.
Ephesians 6:18 ‘And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.’
