The sad fact of life is that we all have lied at some point. I remember in school learning about media ethics and we were introduced to types of lies. We were taught about ‘situational lies’; those that hurt nobody and help someone. ‘minimization lies’ those that reduce the damage made by a previous lie. And many more types: Almost made me find a good side of lies. But throughout my life’s journey, nothing good has ever come out of lies.
I know there are people in the Bible who lied, and it seemed like the right thing to do. That’s why we have the term ‘righteous lies’. Remember Rehab? Remember Abraham, the father of faith? But does it make it right?
Well, God in his ten commandments, he warns us against bearing false witness; that is equivalent to lying. He also encourages us to stick to the truth, that sets us free establish us forever. “The truthful lip shall be established forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.” (Proverbs 12:19) He also says “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.” There are more Bible verses warning us against lying lips than those telling us about people who lied.
We live in a society where lying has become a norm. We are looking for justification to bear false witnesses. We are more concerned about finding reasons to lie than finding reasons to be truthful. We would rather research on ‘Holy lies’ and types of lies in order to get away with it. Today you will be faced with many opportunities to say the truth. The devil will try kill and destroy and steal those opportunities and make you replace them with lies. All types of lies are not beneficial. Choose to honour God by speaking the truth.
