The Bible mentions two times when Jesus was amazed. First we have to remember that Jesus is God and He is amazing, He is the one who was walking around healing the sick and performing miracles. One would wonder, what would amaze Jesus? So whatever amazes Jesus should amaze us too.
Well the first time Jesus was amazed is recorded in Luke 7:1-10. It is the story of the centurion, even when Jesus was willing to come to his house and heal his servant, he sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.” When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well. His great faith amazed Jesus! No one knew that sending a word was even an option, they were used to seeing Jesus on location healing and performing miracles. The only person who knew it was an option was Jesus.
The second time Jesus was amazed was not in a good way. In Mark 6:1-7, Jesus went to his hometown and begins to teach in the synagogue on the Sabbath. The men who heard him were amazed and they started questioning him. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? Isn’t this the carpenter? And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. They could not stand the truth, these were his neighbours, people who should know He started preaching at the age of twelve, these are the people who should be supporting Him, but they did not believe.
Jesus is amazed by our faith; our great faith and our lack of faith. Many miracles have happened because of our faith, and many have not happened because of our lack of faith. With faith as small as a mustard seed, we can command mountains to move, on the other hand, without faith we cannot please God. If God is amazed by you this morning, is it because of your great faith, or your lack of it?
May God help us all, May He strengthen our faith in Him and help us to put it into action. May He take away every doubt that blocks us from believing His word.
