We all have a list of things that could make us happy right now; from owing some things to a change of some situations. Maybe you are thinking of money, an amount that could make you very happy, maybe you are thinking of a gadget, a car, a house, a new job or even change of marital status. Maybe it is the healing of a loved one, getting favour in a legal case or even travelling abroad. I don’t know what name you have given your list of sources of happiness, but we all have such lists or/and thoughts.
I used to think getting a job would make me very happy and I would never be sad again. The truth is that some days I wished I did not have the job, the challenges were many. I also thought getting married was the ultimate source of joy and happiness. I just hit two years in marriage today; marriage is great, but not the ultimate source of happiness. There are days I wonder what I got myself into. We pursue many things because we are looking for happiness. We follow people who promise us happiness. It is a good thing to long for happiness.
God gives us a way of attaining true happiness. The question is, do we pursue it? ‘Happy is the man who does not go in the company of sinners, or take his place in the way of evil-doers, or in the seat of those who do not give honour to the Lord. But whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and whose mind is on his law day and night. He will be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, which gives its fruit at the right time, whose leaves will ever be green; and he will do well in all his undertakings.’ Psalm 1”1-3
That is all we need to do in order to attain true happiness and blessings; watch out where we stand, where we sit and where we walk, honouring God in all we do and meditating on His word. God’s word is true, it never fails. If you are pursuing happiness, try Psalm 1, God promises fruitfulness to them that obey His word, to them that pursue happiness this way. No human being can satisfy our hearts desires and no earthy possession can make us completely happy; true happiness is found in obeying God’s word.
This week I pray that God will give you the grace to seek true happiness.
