This Man Tychicus

If I were to mention ten powerful men of God and ministers of the word from the Bible, I might not have room for Tychicus. Many people don’t even mention him; you might be wondering ‘who is Tychicus?’ Well he was not an apostle, not a teacher, not an elder, not a pastor; he had no official church title. He was a guy working behind the scenes getting things down. He was Paul’s support system. Paul speaks so highly of him, every time Paul’s achievements are mentioned; little is said about this man Tychicus who was always behind Paul, making sure he is fine.

He was with Paul in Rome and also accompanied Paul from Macedonia to Jerusalem.  In Colossians 4:7 Paul places his confidence in Tychicus, ‘Tychicus will tell you all the news about me. He is a dear brother, a faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord.’  He does the same in Ephesians 6:21 ‘Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing.’ For him to be able to tell the people ‘everything’ it means that he knew everything about Paul’s journey and ministry.

No book of the Bible is named after him, he is not one of Jesus’ disciples and he does not have a big title: But he gave Paul great support, not for the fame or to get mentions here and there, with no intention of being paid back. He accepted the calling of being in the support system, where there is no limelight but full of impact. You cannot talk about Paul’s great ministry without mentioning Tychicus, an unsung hero who was a great part of this ministry.

How is your pastor doing? How is his family? How is your ministry leader? Do they need help in something? Have you ever offered to help in any way? Be a Tychicus: Be that man/woman who serves behind the scenes, faithfully. Even if it means making others ‘shine’ and ‘look good’ while nobody notices you. There is a reward for faithful servants. You shall reap what you are sowing behind the scenes. The Lord who sees your motives, your sweat and hard work in secret, will reward you openly.
