High school was a roller coaster for me, it was so evident that I was majoring in extra curricular activities. When it came to my studies, well, as my teachers kept saying, I had potential. Only that I left with so much of it. Something that I really dreaded was the science practicals. (This is where you go to the laboratory and execute what you have been studying) Chemistry was not so bad, but Biology and Physics made me sick. Half of the time I had no idea what was going on, I did not understand what the teacher was explaining and my results were always different from the top students’. To make it worse, there were questions I scored highly in theory, but failed miserably in the practicals.

Lets move on swiftly to marriage. I knew so much about marriage before getting into one. I was always in an environment of counsellors, who talked a lot on how marriage works and how to make it work. I could actually score highly on a marriage exam five years ago. Well, I got married a little over three years ago. Practicals are harder. It is easy to write a list of things a wife should do everyday to keep her marriage, but very hard to start doing them. A good example is forgiveness and letting go of pride. Easy to say. But practically, sometimes I find it hard to forgive small offenses and make my husband pay to get a smile. Other times I let pride take over and behave as though I am not in the room. I have failed terribly on practicals in marriage. But I wake up every day to try again.

In our spiritual lives, we might find ourselves going through the same roller coaster. It is easy to tell people what to do, it is easy to quote scripture and come up with lessons from Paul or David. It is easy to even listen to sermons and spend the whole day praying. But the work is in the doing, the action. That is where we sometimes fail miserably. No matter how much of God’s word we know, it is nothing if we cannot put it into practice. Knowing is very important, but doing is even more important.

James 1:22-25 says “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.”

Today I pray for the grace to excel in practicals. Our notebooks are full, year in year out. Our Bibles are underlined everywhere and some are even torn. Now its time for the knowledge we have to reflect trough our actions. It doesn’t matter how many times we have failed, lets wake up and try again. It is time to be known as those who remember what we look like and act like it. It is hard when we depend on our own strength and wisdom: But very possible when we depend on God’s power and trust Him with all our hearts. Now you have done very well in practicals, go and excel in the practicals.
