The Secret is In

Last week I visited a couple married for 44 years! It was such a joy looking at them, just the two of them laughing and enjoying each other’s company. All their four children are married with their own families. I was so curious, asking a question after the other. How do you keep this spark after all these years? You are both retired, what do you do the whole day? Do you get bored? How did you make it? They graciously answered all my questions with what seemed like a consistent answer. ‘The God is us deserves all the glory!’ ‘The God we serve has been faithful.’ ‘Our God has renewed our strength’

The lady narrated to me how she spends time in prayer, how they read the word together and encourage one another, how they invest together and pray over their household. She insisted that no marriage can work without He who is greater! He who lives in us!

Many times we look at the outside for strength. We intentionally look for mentors, we look for books, we watch videos, we follow celebrities online, trying to find answers, trying to find ways of making life bearable. Yet, the strength, the joy, the peace we are looking for is in us. Because Christ dwells in us. He is more powerful than any power in this world. He is wiser than any wisdom we may find in this world. As children of God we should be confident as we face each day, nothing can hold us down. We should not underestimate the one who lives within us, He is Greater!

“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” John 4:4

The Bible also says in Romans 6:10-11 that “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.” We have been given power and authority through Jesus Christ to live abundant lives. Don’t look outside, pause and consult the greater one who is in you. The greater love, the greater peace, the greater joy!

As the couple spoke to me, at first I was dismissing them as trying to be politically correct. But as they kept talking, the truth was revealed. I admired their faith in God, their confidence in their God who dwells in them. Their confidence in scripture and the warmth of their home. As I sat there waiting for them to share secrets of their happy marriage, they pointed me to Christ. The secret already dwells in me.

Today, I pray that we focus on the God in us. He is greater than the greatness of this world. All other sand is sinking sand.
