The Hardened Heart

When I hear, ‘Hardened heart’ I automatically think about Hebrews 3:15 “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts,…” I then start thinking about people who do not believe in God. Those who have declared to have no faith in Him and are doing all they can to make sure those who believe stop being ‘brainwashed’ I think about people who do not go to church, those who laugh at church goers, those who don’t own any Bible because they do not believe what it says, those who publicly declare that there is no God. I often pray that God will change their hearts of stone and grant them a heart of flesh receptive of the gospel. This, I have been told is a good thing, because no one is too far gone to be captured by God’s love. We have seen many Saul’s turn into Paul’s, so there is hope.

Recently, I came across another type of people with hardened hearts. These ones are very hard to spot, they are in James 1:24, those  who hear the word but do not carry it out, they have been compared to a man who looks at his face in a mirror and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. I know you wouldn’t mind a little description: So these people go to church, they know about God, they even preach about Him, they are seen in church functions and activities, they are known to many as strong believers, they post about God daily on their social media. But they do not practice what they preach; they do not do what God commands them to do. Often, their hardened hearts are covered by religious activities. It is so hard to spot them. It is almost impossible to correct them.

Many times we hide in sin, not being accountable to anyone, repenting once in a while but sooner or later our conscience dries up and we are no longer bothered by sin, especially when no one knows about it. Hebrews 3:13 says ‘But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.’  So today, you who is born again, you who knows Gods word, you who has been living in sin but presenting yourself clean in sheep’s clothing, when you hear His voice calling you to true repentance, do not harden your heart. No matter how hard it has become, no matter how long you have played games with God’s grace, He is still faithful and just to forgive you and cleanse you from every form of unrighteousness.

It doesn’t matter whether you say you are a Christian or not, what is the condition of your heart? May the Lord bring conviction, bring repentance and bring eternal life.

Amen.
