The Courage To Obey

‘What is your greatest fear?’ is a question I have given numerous answers to throughout my life: From snakes, to frogs, to mathematics, to dogs, to death, to failure, to loss and to not fulfilling my purpose on earth. At every point in life, everyone has a point of fear. Like me, your greatest fear may keep changing, as you overcome one after another. We have a choice to make every day, whether to face life fearfully or to arise and face it courageously. I have come face to face with fear and realized that sometimes, I was scared of nothing. At times I have gone around something because of fear only to realize that I have wasted a lot of time; facing it could have been easier.

Fear is a liar; it magnifies the challenge and paralyses us from moving forward. God often instructs us to do certain things, and many times they appear to be so big and difficult. We cannot obey God in fear. If Noah was afraid, he would have drowned in the floods. If Abraham was afraid he would have missed out on God’s blessing. If Mary was afraid, she would not have been the mother of Jesus. If Esther was afraid, she would not have saved her people. Well, maybe they were afraid at some point, because they were human; but they did not let fear overpower them.

Everything God commands us to do takes courage; walking by faith takes courage. What has God instructed you to do? Are you afraid? When Joshua was afraid, this is what God told him. ‘No one shall stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you or forsake you. Be strong and courageous, for you shall give these people the inheritance of the land that I swore to their fathers I would give them.’ (Joshua 1:5-6) Today, be assured that God is with you, He will never leave you, He will never forsake you.

Even when it does not make sense, even when you do not understand why, even when you feel unworthy, go for it! Do exactly what God instructs you to do. There is a blessing that comes with obedience.  May the Lord grant us all courage to obey, may we on this day, take the steps towards obeying God’s word and the specific instructions He has given us. May we not succumb to fear that causes us to disobey but rather, arise in courage knowing that we are not alone.

For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power, love, and self-control. (2nd Timothy 1:7)
