In school, we had these overconfident group of students who were always awarded as top students. It was almost automatic that their names would be called out for awards at the end of the term. Some would even prepare for the night, how they would receive the prices and the speeches they would give. I remember an incident where one student outdid all top students literally from nowhere and scooped all prizes. It was unbelievable! The giants were down after rubbing it on everyone’s face how unbeatable they were.
There is a great danger in thinking that one is too strong to fall; that one is unbeatable. Especially when it comes to our faith. Paul warns us in 1st Corinthians 10:12 “Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.” We often look at people who make mistakes and wonder how stupid they were. We ask how they did not see it coming. Poor Eve, the first human to disobey. How many times have you thought that if you were Eve you would never have eaten the forbidden fruit? Well, I have many times.
Paul gives a stern warning against thinking that we are immune to temptation and sin. Thinking that we are standing strong and nothing can shake us. Well, no one is immune to making the mistakes that people in the Bible made. No one is immune to being proud and thinking they can never fall. We are all weak, depending on a strong God. We are all prone to falling, and that is why we daily should ask God for forgiveness, for His grace, and His wisdom.
Not that we should fear satan, but we should be alert to his schemes by shunning away from pride. Pride makes you think that you will forever be that top student and no one is wiser than you. Today, take heed lest you fall. Take heed of God’s instruction, take heed of His wisdom.
