When my daughter was younger, I once discovered that many verses in her Bible were highlighted; it was so busy and colourful at the same time. I was impressed. My Bible was a busy one to, filled with book marks and verses highlighted with different colours. Those are the verses that stand out for me, or those that need further research on. So seeing my daughters Bible all so colourful made me so happy, so I hurriedly went to where she was to congratulate her for reading almost the entire Bible and even highlighting main scripture. She looked at me with a goofy smile and I knew I was just about about to be disapointed. She told me one day she was bored and she just started colouring her Bible so that it looks more serious and thoroughly read like mine. I walked away slowly, and we talked about it later.
There are things that the world looks at and labels us serious Christians; having a highlighted Bible, a cute notebook with notes written in different colours, bracelets with key Bible verses, T-shirts with scriptures on them, oh and sticky notes! I remember I once had sticky notes with prayer requests and answered prayers all over my bedroom walls. Everyone who stepped in my room was fascinated. What a serious Christian!
God, however, is not moved by any of those things. Yes they are important and help some of us grow spiritually, but that’s not it. God is not looking for a well highlighted Bible, but for that one person who lives out scripture. That one who walks in obedience to His word. You don’t have to see my Bible, look at my custom-made notebook or walk in my room to know that I am born again, all you need is five minutes in my presence. Our behaviour, our speech, our way of life, speaks louder! God is not looking for those who read the Bible, highlight and go. He is looking for those who read and do what it says; those are the serious Christians. The Bible says, if we only read, we are deceiving ourselves.
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.” James 1:22-24
It doesn’t matter how saved someone looks from the outside, it doesn’t matter how religious they are. Don’t be too focused on showing the world how serious you are, because even if the whole world praise you because of what they see, God still looks at the heart. Remember what He told Samuel? “…man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
So serious Christians depict the fruit of the spirit, serious Christians do what the Bible says, serious Christians are made in the secret place. My the Lord help us all, not to do things so as to appear more saved, but to diligently seek and obey Him.
