Run To Win

‘Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air.’ (1 Corinthians 9:24-26)

I love the above verses; they remind me that I am in a race, and that I should keep on running. This morning, I would like to remind you that the only way we can get the prize is by running. Are you running the race to win this crown that will last? No one can run this one for you, and you cannot get the prize if you just sit there. On your marks, get set, go! All of us qualify for the price if we run like we are supposed to run, once you get saved, you are allowed to participate in the race.

We may all be running, at our different paces, but the goal here is to run in such a way as to get the price. Here is how:

1. We must learn to prepare; we may have to lift up weights, wake up very early to exercise and keep fit. Preparation also helps in cutting off excess weight and baggage. You and I keep fit and strong by praying, by reading God’s word. Exercise is painful at times, it may be cruel to our bodies, but at the end, the results are worth it. Persevere through the training, let go of past hurts and pains. It is easier to run when you have no baggage on your shoulders.

2. We must learn to say no to distractions; athletes say no to fast foods, to parties and other types of non-beneficial leisure, they undergo disciplined training so as to win the race. For us to win this race of faith, we must say no to distractions of sin. Sin will slow you down; resist the devil as you keep running. Focus on the goal, keep your eyes on Jesus, the only constant mark we have in this race.

3. We must also run according to the rules, there are no shortcuts. The rules are stipulated in the Bible, we need to read the rules carefully and run in such a way not to be disqualified. The rules stipulate that for us to run the race in order to win, we must stay connected to the true vine, without God, we are running aimlessly without a goal. You cannot be crowned unless you compete the way God commands you to. Your character matters in this race!

Today, be encouraged to keep running. Run to win, run for the crown. Do not quit, no matter how painful it gets! At the finish line, there is an eternal reward. May it be seen in your actions, your speech and in your choices that you are running to win:  Are you running aimlessly? May God help us all to start running or keep running for the ultimate eternal crown.
