There are times I would sit and start replaying the past in my mind, crazy enough I would only think about the bad things that happened more than the good things that I have experienced. Most of the things I thought about brought about questions that I will never get answers to until I get to heaven. I wondered why God allowed my teenage-hood friend to suddenly loose her mind and become a mad woman roaming in the market. I thought about things that brought me heartache and pain, and felt the pain over and over again. Here is what I learnt; the past is already gone, and the more I went back, the more I wasted my ‘now’ and messed with my future.
Well, dwelling in the past makes you lean on what is not working yet there are things around you that are working. We need to get rid of the old things because God is doing something new. We cannot perceive the new things if our minds are buried in the past. Here and now, God is doing something new; God is making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. The past can be tiring, please stop going back, arise and look ahead, great things are about to happen, you need to see them.
Today are you trying to mess with the past? Trying to change things that already happened? Wondering how it could have been if the pandemic was not there? Trying to imagine where you would be if you got married to your ex-girlfriend? Trying to picture what you would be if you performed well in school. Your past is over. You cannot change it. Let it go, it has already happened. It is dangerous to try meddling; there is completely nothing you can do about it. All you are doing is wasting the times you have now.
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past…” (Isaiah 43:18)
Just because your past has many negative experiences, do not speak the negativity into the future. Your future is in God’s hands and He knows the plans that He has for you! Even when people remind you of who you used to be remind yourself of who you are now. You are a new creation experiencing new things that God is doing in your life. Instead of replaying the painful past, think about whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things. ( Philippians 4:8)
May the Lord help us to forget the past and focus on the present. That the guilt and the shame of the past will not destroy our present. That we shall pick lessons and press forward.
