I have been brought up by teachers; in Kenya this means that growing up, being seen seated anywhere without a book was a punishable offense. My mother just retired recently, so for once, our house has no books being marked or marking schemes and term planners lying around. I have seen my parents’ routines as teachers and one tings stood out; when they were ‘teacher on duty’ it wasn’t business as usual!
Let me explain briefly what being ‘teacher on duty’ means. Well, in many schools the teachers had schedules to take charge. I believe they still do. So each one week, one or two teachers would be in charge of the general school routine. This included making sure the students adhered to the daily routine and order is maintained at all times. So my parents would wake up unusually early to be in school before the students, they would be more disciplined an strict. It also had a ripple effect on us, for some reason, we were punished more when they were on duty.
Today, I have been thinking of how sometimes spiritually I behave like I’m on duty. Especially when I have a big role to play in church or when I get invited for a speaking engagements. Well, I wake up early, I make sure that I am well prepared, my prayer time is extended, I read the Bible more, I even prepare what to wear. My seven month old baby doesn’t stop me at all, I make sure everything works! (Remember my post on ‘Because I want to?’ Oh yes, I get things done in such occasions.) When on ‘duty’ It is not business as usual!
The fact is, as a child of God, the Bible instructs me to be on duty every week, every month, every day, every hour. The Bible should not be read seriously on special occasions.: It should be read and meditated on day and night. (Joshua 1:8 ‘Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.) Prayers should not be made when in trouble; I should pray at all times. (1 Thessalonians 5:17–19 ‘pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus’) Spiritual disciple should not be reserved for special days, especially for the public, it should be a daily practice, especially in private. So help me God!
Do you also desire to be on duty every day? Wait, do you have the same challenge or I’m I the only one?Well if you do, I pray for you too, that your relationship with God will be a priority to you and you will do all it takes to make sure you are growing spiritually. That you will not wait for some big assignment to push you into God’s word. That you will be found prepared in season and out of season. That your spiritual discipline will spill over those around you and impact them positively. That you will stand firm as a Christian, fully clothed with the armor of God because each week, each day, each hour, each minute WE ARE ON DUTY!
