Nothing Has Changed

I have been thinking about the prodigal son, the part where he was rehearsing how he will go back home.’ I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ Luke 15:18-19) Shock on him, when he goes back, things are not as worse as he thought. He expected to be made a servant but found out that he was still a son. Nothing had changed.

When I got pregnant at 17, I also had such a moment, I knew my parents would kill me. I pictured it on my mind. I saw my mother boil water, immerse me in, skin me, dissect me and roast me. (okay the only thing I had seen her kill was chicken) I saw my dad chase me away and threw a huge stone at me. Just the way he did at stray dogs (Sorry animal lovers, that was way before we knew animals had rights)

Okay when I got home, there was no arms around me, there was no kiss, there was no ring, there was no killing of the fattened calf, actually no animal was being fattened for anyone. There was no feast, no celebrations. Instead there was some beating, scolding and disappointment: But I was not killed, after the moment of discipline, they took great care of me. They went ahead and took great care of my daughter. I had done wrong, I did not meet their expectation, but I was still their daughter. Nothing had changed.

According to Luke 11:13, no matter how evil parents are, they know how to give good gifts to their children. Matthew 7: 9-10 then asks “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? Chapter 11 says exactly what I want you to know today. ‘If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!’

You have gone astray, you have fallen into habitual sin and you have done the worst. You have even backslid. You keep rehearsing how you should go back to God, but you are thinking of the worst. How He will smash you like an ant. My friend, nothing has changed. You are still God’s beloved. He says nothing can separate you from His love, not even sin. Come back to God, it will not be as bad as you think. He is not waiting for you with a whip. In fact He says if you confess your sins, He is faithful and just to forgive you and cleanse you from every unrighteousness. I don’t know what you have done, but God knows, and He still loves you. He is waiting to receive you in His loving arms. He doesn’t call you by your sin, He calls you by name.

Nothing has changed.
