Not My Own

The hardest part of ministry is trying to achieve anything on one’s own strength. It is not only hard but frustrating: You see, the devil is out here planting seeds of deception in the minds of those dedicated to God’s service. You may have written a hundred Christian books but that does not mean that you can write another one on your own. You may have preached for years and become so good, receiving the praises of men daily; but don’t be fooled, you still need the power of God to keep preaching. You cannot achieve anything on your own. Many strong Christians have fallen, because they got to a point of familiarization with God, and thought the gift can have godly impact without God.

‘The presence of the Lord makes all the difference’, that’s one of my favorite quotes. You know, sometimes we question the fruit: How come I did the same thing but he got different results? How come she is at peace and she is going through worse? How come I have done this for longer than him yet he seems to be ahead? Why is she having more impact yet she is so young? Well, it is the presence of God, and total dependence on His power. Remember David and Goliath, everything was ridiculous; in the human eye, it was impossible for David to defeat Goliath. But… the presence of God made all the difference, David understood that he could not do it on his own. In 1 Samuel 17:45, he said “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty.”

God in His word tells us that He is the true vine, and for us to do anything meaningful, anything of kingdom value, then we must remain connected to Him. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.” John 15:5-6. This means that even when you are receiving the praises of men because you look like you are achieving much, if you are no connected to God, you are doing nothing.

Today I pray that our spiritual eyes will be opened to see and know that we need God in everything. All we are able to accomplish is not by might nor by power, but by the spirit of the LORD Almighty. That we will fully trust God and depend on Him for everything. That when all is said and done, we shall be found seeking God for who he is and not just for what He can do. That no matter how much of experts we are to the world, we will know that without staying connected to God, all is vanity. That we will never neglect spiritual disciplines thinking that we have enough experience to survive outside Christ. So help us Lord.
