“No, but you did laugh.”

Every time I read about Abraham and Sarah I wonder why she was denying that she had laughed. How could she lie to God? This is what happened, In Genesis 18: 10-15…

‘Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.” Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.  So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.” But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”

I see myself in Sarah all the time; I have laughed in my heart but been afraid to reveal my laughter to those around me. Such laughter means ‘unbelievable’ ‘impossible’ or ‘are you joking?’ One day as a little girl I used to have big dreams, I was sure they would not come to pass, because of my background and the far my people had gone. So after thinking about the impossible, I would dismiss them with a silent laugh because there was no way some things would ever happen. This might sound ridiculous but one of them was boarding a flight. I know it may not be a big dream, but it was to me.

Well, all of my laughable childhood dreams have come to pass. This is because nothing is too hard for the Lord. Yes, you can laugh, God will know you have laughed. You have reasons to laugh, I had reasons to laugh and in my mind, my human mind, my reasons seemed valid. Today you may be laughing in your heart, don’t deny it, instead acknowledge that you do not believe and ask God to increase your faith, that you will strongly believe that no matter your story and background, nothing is impossible with God!

It seems impossible, you have been laughing; you are even laughing right now, because you are human. God sees your unbelief, but it wont stop Him from being God. God is not limited, despite her age, Sarah conceived: Despite your circumstances, that desire, that dream, that promise, will come to pass.
