Ever heard of the story of the broken finger? So a man went to the doctor saying that his whole body is aching. He lamented that every part of his body was in pain, in fact he cannot touch any part of his body. SO the doctor instructed him to touch his forehead and he scream in pain, the same thing happened when he touched his arm, his back, his nose, his feet, it was true he was in so much pain. He asked the doctor, ‘what is the problem?’ the doctor looked at him and said ‘your body is okay; the problem is in your finger’
I have been thinking about this story a lot, especially because of the moral decay in our society. I have had many conversations with people on the increased number of teen pregnancies in the country and everyone seems to be pointing a finger at someone else. We are blaming the parents, the boy child, the girl child, the church, the media and even the government! This is because it is true, every part of the body is in pain, because the problem is in the finger we are using to touch. But for how long will we keep blaming the entire body and ignoring the main problem that is in the finger?
We are the parents and guardians of the wayward young people, they were raised by us. By this I don’t mean biologically, you are a role model to someone, whether you know it or not, that is why you are feeling the pain. I have resolved to look at the finger, and I would suggest you also look at the finger. Maybe as an individual there’s little you can do to change what is happening in the media, but you can do something right where you are with what you have. Change begins with you and I. Could it be that we are against teen pregnancies yet we are also committing adultery and fornication? Are we telling children to stop watching pornography so that they don’t bump on us on those sites?
Arise as an individual and honour God, be the sane one; the faithful one. Say no to all forms of ungodliness and unrighteousness for your sake and for the sake of those looking up to you. ‘For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them’ Romans 1:18
May the Lord search us this day, we have talked a lot, we have pointed fingers, we each have a list of things other people should do, but maybe the problem is the finger, and unless we deal with it, the entire body will keep aching. Would you like Paul confidently tell the young people around you ‘Follow me as I follow Christ? Or would you be misleading them?
