Since the outbreak of corona virus, there has been so much information circulating. One of the things we were told from the beginning is to look out for the symptoms: Dry Cough, fever, tiredness and difficulty in breathing. I have been tired before, there is a time I was given a short break from work because of fatigue, after a few days of resting, I was refreshed. I don’t remember anytime I have gone for a week without coughing, well not always the severe one, but mostly mild coughing. I have had fever and shortness of breath before especially when sick. I have ignored all these symptoms before and things fell into place: But not now. I have never been this alert about my health, my surrounding and my hygiene. Because I know and understand the seriousness of the disease, I am cautious of any symptom; I follow all precautions and do my best to keep safe.
In dating we are also told to look out for signs and symptoms that we often refer to as ‘red flags’. When a partner is abusive; both physically and emotionally, that’s a red flag. When a partner has multiple partners, that’s a red flag, when a partner is very secretive, that’s a red flag, when a partner is always too busy for you, that’s a red flag; those are just few examples. So when someone gets into a relationship, they look out for the signs, some are wise enough to flee when the symptoms show, but others keep at it thinking he/she will change: Most don’t, they later talk about the red flags that they ignored.
This morning I have been thinking about other symptoms in my spiritual walk: Red flags of sin, the signs and symptoms that you are not on track as far as your salvation is concerned; for example, symptoms of pride, symptoms of backsliding, symptoms of jealousy and symptoms of toxicity. In short: Symptoms of sin. Believe it or not, every sin begins with a symptom. Before you act it, you think it; you imagine it and you yearn for it. Before you backslide, your desire for fellowship dwindles, your time with God reduces, you stop reading the Bible, you stop giving your tithes and offerings, you hardly go to church, your company changes, you rarely pray and you know it. The Holy Spirit always reveals to us the red flags. The question is, are we paying attention? Are we looking out for these symptoms? Are we doing anything about it? Looking at the seriousness we have concerning the fight against corona virus, can it be compared to the seriousness we have when fleeing from sin and resisting the devil? Are we building our spiritual immunity with the same measure we are building our physical immunity?
Each of us should regularly examine ourselves for any symptoms of being spiritually off track. If we notice any symptom, we should do all it takes to get back on track. If we keep ignoring the symptoms, the virus of sin will destroy us. God wants us to have victory over sin. “Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” (Romans 6:12-14)
