Long distance relationships are strenuous! I have nothing to sugarcoat this statement with. From experience, long distance relationships need a lot of grace. Everything seems to be harder. Communicating clearly becomes a tussle. Misunderstandings are intensified. Do we need to mention that intimacy is almost impossible? If one party decides to be slow in communication or to cut it off completely, the relationship dies. Well, all relationships need commitment but long distance friends need more intentional commitment and communication. Most people in such arrangements are always working out ways to be together. In fact if one is in a long distance relationship (courting or even married) and they have no plans to be together, it’s a red flag! Again if two people, especially spouses, are very comfortable away from each other for a very long period, with no plans of being together, there is a problem!
Are you in a long distance relationship with God? Is your relationship with God straining because of the distance you have created? Do you intentionally invest in your relationship with God? Kindly note that going to church once in a while, praying for good when you remember and paying tithe when you feel like are signs that your relationship with God is distant. (These are things we ought to do with joy because of the deep relationship we have with God, not as duties)
We ought to grow beyond religious activities and cultivate a personal deep relationship with God. This is through praying continually at all times because it is God’s will for us in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). We also ought to commit to reading and meditating on God’s word. “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” Joshua 1:8.
Once we are personally communicating with God and dwelling on His word, we get closer to Him and we will allow Him to be Lord over our lives. Remember, God is constant, He is ever present. So if your relationship with Him is not growing, you are the one who is not playing your part in committing to this relationship. Someone said that if you used to be close with God, you are the one who moved.
Most people in long distance relationships work towards being together. So if you have been in a long distance relationship with God, there’s something you can do to grow closer to Him. Don’t let the guilt of being absent draw you further from Him. Take those baby steps in prayer and in reading the Bible; start intentionally cultivating the relationship. Remember you are not alone, the Holy Spirit is your enabler. It is possible, not by power nor by might but by the spirit of God. So do something about that strenuous relationship, God is here, ready to speak, ready to instruct, ready to lead, ready to show Himself.
May the Lord help us all not to be comfortable in a long distance relationship with Him. May He help us to do something about growing our relationship with Him today.
