Live out your light!

A famous quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson goes, “Your actions speak so loudly, I cannot hear what you are saying.” It gets me all the time, because I am very talkative, my words sometimes get ahead of me. I have never been called to speak and ended my speech/sermon on time (Please don’t use this against me, I eventually wind up) I am very poor in the game of charades, I always end up talking yet I am supposed to use actions to communicate. Despite all this challenges, communication experts say my actions, gestures and other non-verbal forms of communication say more than my words are.

As children of God, we are called to be the salt and light of the world. In some cases this requires talking, but in most, it requires our actions. That is why we are also called not just to be hearers of the Word of God but also do what it says. If we want people to be attracted to our God, then we should reduce the talking and increase the ‘being Christ-like’. Just like babies, the world is watching to do what we do, if it has benefits, they are not watching just to hear what we say. We are often referred to as hypocrites because our words don’t match our actions, a case of preaching water and drinking wine.

‘In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.’ Matthew 5:16 Jesus teaches about being the light of the world, warns against hiding the light under a basket and then talks about our light being seen. In this world filled with darkness, children of God need to thrive, because light thrives in darkness, it is not time to shy away and accuse the world of being too dark. Our good deeds need to be seen in this corrupt society, in these immoral neighborhoods, amidst murmurs and in times when God’s presence is being ignored even in church. This is the time to thrive. Once the light is on, all we need to do is to let it shine; we don’t have to shout at people reminding them of how bright we are. Just shine.

Our light shines when we honour God, when we flee from sin, when we stay true to what God’s word says, when we are courageous to trust in the Lord, when we listen and believe the voice of truth. Today, what are your actions saying? Are people around you praising God in heaven because of your light that is shining before them? Is your neighborhood illuminated by your good deeds? Be reminded that the world is depending on your actions. I pray that the Lord will help us to be the light of the world: Unashamed.
