They grow up so fast! My daughter has already mastered the art of twisting and turning earphones, from her pockets to under the clothes to the ears. At a glance you wont notice that she has her earphones on. I have found myself talking for hours, thinking its her introvert nature preventing her from responding. Only to realize that she is listening to something else, and its actually louder and closer to her eardrum than what I am saying. When I make gestures, she innocently removes her earphones and say ‘what? are you talking to me?’
That is exactly how some of us behave in our faith. We are in God’s presence, maybe even in church but our ears are inclined towards what other people are saying. Maybe you have your Bible open and you also have a movie on. You are listening to worship music, but your eyes are fixed on social media. You are having quiet time, with a journal and pen on the table but listening to music that does not glorify God.
God is always speaking, even His silence speaks. But are you listening or you some other voice is louder and closer to your spiritual eardrum? Are you paying attention to what God is saying? Multitasking will cause you to drift away. Hebrews 2:1 calls us to pay close attention. ‘Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.’ The sheep is John 10:27 are actually paying attention to hear His voice. ‘My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. ‘
Are you complaining that God does not speak yet you are listening to something else? Yet your priority is elsewhere? Are you physically packaged like a Christian yet your spirit is not attentive? May God help us take off the hidden earphones and give Him full attention. May He teach us to position ourselves to hear from Him.
