How Lazy Are You?

What if I told you that you don’t have to do anything as far as your salvation is concerned? Every Morning I will pray for you, all you need to do is just agree with what I say. You can actually continue sleeping as I pray for you. I will read the Bible for you and just give you a summary or quote. On fasting, all you need is to tell me your preferred day of the week and I will fast for you once a week. I am also willing to attend church services and fellowships on your behalf, go for missions on your behalf and even give tithes and offerings for you. Anything that is too hard or stressful for you spiritually, I’m here for you. I understand that it’s a lot of work sometimes yet you have other important things to do, that is why I am offering to help: So that you do not get too tired and overwhelmed. Would you take up the offer? Wait, I will also post Bible verses on your social media platforms and make sure the world knows how spiritual you are.

If you don’t take the offer above, it means you are comfortable in doing the necessary as a Christian to ensure growth in your walk with Christ. It also means that you value your relationship with God and you are ready to work for it. On the other hand, if you wouldn’t mind my offer, then we need to talk: The truth is, you are a lazy Christian and lazy Christians don’t grow. The reason why you wouldn’t mind someone doing all the work for you is because it’s not a priority to you. It is something that can be left out.  Paul says that we should work out our own salvation in fear and trembling. (Philippians 2:12-13) There is work to be done; there are sacrifices to be made. Even if you had the best Bible study group and accountability partners, there are things that you must do for yourself. It is not easy, but as you work out your own salvation. The Holy Spirit is your helper.

My grandmother often told us that on judgment day, she will not represent her family. Everyone will give a personal account. So we should not relax because she prays for all of us by name, we should not stay home and play because she is very active in church. Everyone must be born again for their place in heaven. We learnt then, that we have roles to play individually. We learnt not to be afraid of work. It worked for our good. It is very sad if the only time you open your Bible is in church when the pastor instructs you to. It is sad if the only time you pray is when you are in trouble. It is extremely sad if you are working hard to make the world believe that you are close to God yet you are too lazy to work out your salvation.

For you to get closer to God, you have to be willing to walk to where He is. People will walk with you, but no one will bend down to lift your feet one after another. There are things only you should do. It is not always easy; it takes time, strength sacrifice and a lot of commitment. It is not a one-time act, it is continuous and we need to work at it every day. When we feel lazy and tired, we pray for strength and keep moving. No one is too busy to talk to you, people just have priorities. The same applies to our relationship with God, you are not too busy, you are not too lazy, you are not too young, you are not too shy; it is just not a priority.

Lord, teach us to work.
