I recently did a video on masturbation for my Friday show ‘The Wave’: A show for single ladies. It is a topic I have been dealing with in my inbox and I thought of publicly addressing it. So I came up with a few steps one should take to fight this sinful habit. Little did I know that so many people are fighting this battle secretly. One of the reasons why masturbation is eating up people slowly is that it is very easy to hide from the public, it is a sexual sin that one commits alone and in most cases no one else knows about it. We walk around pretending to be Holy yet we have spent the night in sexual sin.
It then reduces the seriousness of sin, making us assume that it is not that big of a deal: Especially when its effects are not visible publicly. Life then goes on ‘as usual’ yet we are dying on the inside. We forget that God knows everything; our thoughts, our words, our actions and even our motives: Nothing is hidden from him. ‘Hidden sin’ denies us intimacy with God, it robs us of the joy of the Lord, it affects the communities around us and also angers God.
In Joshua 7, a man called Achan dares to disobey God’s commands and tries to keep it secret. ‘ But the Israelites were unfaithful in regard to the devoted things; Achan son of Karmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of them. So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel.’ Once confronted, he confesses but the damage had already been caused. The entire community was suffering because of him. “Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I have done: When I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia, two hundred shekels of silver and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath”
No one wins by keeping hidden sin, eventually the sin will find you out and ultimately kill you. (The wages of sin is death) Come out and seek help, God is able to break every chain of sin entangling you. Even if you have been keeping the secret for years, it does not make it less of a sin. There is hope. Our God is merciful and gracious, He tells us to confess our sin and depend on Him for victory over sin. He is able to restore us and lead us to righteousness.
Are you harbouring any secret sin? Ask God for grace to stop it. Ask Him for His wisdom to say no. Remember, that ‘secret sin’ is not secret after all, God knows about it and it is hurting you most.
