He will not give you stones…

My daughter asks for many things, I think every day she has to ask for something. Some are important while some are not. Sometimes she asks for things she does not need and I have to explain to her why she cannot have them now. At times the things she asks for are very ridiculous, and I end up not even explaining why she cannot have them. Well, we also have those times that she asks for things that I cannot afford; it breaks my heart not to be able to provide at times. In all this situations, what I like about her is that she asks, even when she knows it’s beyond her parents she still asks.

God encourages us to ask Him for whatever we want. He says in Matthew 7:7 ‘Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.’ We are commanded to ask, just like a little child, whether we need the things or want them, whether they are important or not, we should have a habit of asking. Unlike our earthy parents, God knows what we need and He is never limited. “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!’ (Matthew 7:9-11)

God will not give you stones or snakes to intentionally hurt you or make fun of you. The Bible states that He is a good father who knows our needs and is able to supply them according to His riches in glory. So why aren’t you asking? Maybe you are afraid of asking because of the sins you have committed. Maybe you are afraid of asking because your requests seem so big or so small. Maybe you are afraid of asking because last time He said ‘no’.  All these and many more reasons make us refrain from doing that which God has commanded us to do: Ask.

No one is too sinful to ask, If you confess your sins God is faithful and just to forgive. No one is too weak to ask, when we are weak, then He is strong. Even when God says ‘no’ keep asking because He will not give you a snake when you ask for fish. He knows your true needs and cares for you. Today I pray that God will teach us to ask, how to ask when to ask and what to ask for.
