I was raise up thinking that sitting down to take a rest is sin. We were not supposed to be found just sitting, or watching TV during the day, it was an act of laziness. We watched TV in the evening and slept at night, the day was filled with activities, chores and studies. My mother kept saying, ‘why are you seated there?’ and we couldn’t answer, ‘we are resting’ instead we located any chores near us and got busy. Now all grown up, I have had to change my mindset about resting; I have had to accept that being in bed at 10:00am is not laziness, it depends with the context and surrounding situation.
Physically, we have been referred to us a ‘tired generation’ we are always busy, hence always tired. I remember at some point in my life when I was employed, the first word I used to say in the morning waking up was ‘I am tired’ and the first thing I said arriving home was also ‘I am tired’ Tired of work tired of sleeping, tired of the movies, tired of chores, tired of everything. By the time I realized my body was getting weak, I was already too drained to go to work. A doctor sat me down and told me to normalize resting, that I should intentionally plan to sit and do nothing. I did and it worked, right now, rest is my priority, because without it I cannot work. We all have remedies for physical fatigue, some take a break from work, some go for vacations, some go to the spa and some just sleep.
We have another kind of ‘tired and weary’ the spiritual fatigue, when our souls are torn, yearning for peace and rest. We all get to this point, where sleeping, eating, going for vacations don’t help. At times we end up blaming the people around us, yet our help cannot be found in any human being or earthly solution. Ever heard of Inner peace? Exactly! So it means that we can have everything physical that we desire but lack the inner peace. The peace that makes us say, ‘it is well with my soul’ even when situations around us are overwhelming. Peace that you don’t need to work for; the one that only Jesus can give.
In Matthew 11:28 Jesus said ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.’ All we need to do is ‘Come to Jesus’ I was once told that it is not said ‘Go to Jesus’ because He is not distant, we say ‘Come to Jesus’ because He is near. Everyone is invited to come, no matter who you are and what you have done, rest is found in Christ. In the midst of hardships and uncertainties, Jesus says, in this world we will find trouble but in Him we will find peace, He goes on to say that no one else can give the kind of peace that He gives, he gives a peace that surpasses all human understanding. Even when things are bad, we can stand strong with our hearts and minds guarded in Christ Jesus.
Are you weary? Are you heavy laden? Come to Jesus. His rest is available. Many things can take rest away from our souls; choose to fins rest in Christ alone.
