Easily Entangled

Most of you know that my daughter is into crocheting; she developed the passion a few years ago and is still pursuing it. In the early stages of her learning, she had not mastered the art of protecting the yarn. White scarfs would turn out brown because of dirt and sometimes the scarf would end up shapeless. Whatever challenge she faced, she would laugh at it and start over. However, one thing that frustrated her was entangled yarn! With entangled yarn, it is impossible to keep crocheting; she would spend time trying to figure out how to disentangle the yarn, and in some cases we had to cut and tie knots, which caused unevenness.

Nowadays, it is no longer a challenge, because she told me ‘when I see signs of entanglement, I sort it out immediately, before it becomes worse. If the yarn doesn’t flow smoothly, I have to sort the problem out, or else, I will spend the whole day trying to disentangle the yarn’

For me, this is more than a life lesson because we often find ourselves entangled by sin. As Paul says, ‘sin that easily entangles’ this means that it is very easy to be caught up, to find yourself slowly fading into sin and straying from your faith. There is no special sin that entangles easier than the rest, sin is sin and we are all tempted according to our own desires. We are called upon in Hebrews 12:1-2 to be careful not to be entangled. ‘Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.’

When things are no longer flowing well spiritually, we should be quick to examine our lives and see if we have any provisions for the flesh in regard to its lusts. The best time to fix a problem is immediately we notice it exists, the more you ignore it, the more we risk being entangled by sin. We are to look to Christ and follow His example, of obedience, faithfulness and humility. Or else, once we are deep in sin it is more work to disentangle, and while at it, everything else has to stop until we are set free.

Why do we allow ourselves to be entangled? Because at first it looks harmless, we are blinded by temporary pleasures that make us think it won’t cause much harm. We assume that it cannot be as bad as people say; that we can still make things work, only to find out the truth when we get stuck. Friends, watch out for any signs and flee. Be on the look, resist the devil, say no to anything that hinders you from running.

We are in a race, and we need to be light enough to endure the race. We need to throw away everything that weighs us down. The more you get entangled in sin, the harder it is to run the race. Set yourself free today. When you feel discouraged and want to give up, remember those who went before us, those who remained faithful and made it. Be encouraged, no matter how entangled you are, God can set you free, if you are willing to surrender to Him.
