I just came across the best ever illustration of how some of us are living this Christian life. My best drink is fresh passion fruit juice and my worst drink is fermented milk. (This will offend everyone I know, they are aware that I don’t even like yoghurt but publicly declaring so will hurt them) So if I were to pick any drink, passion juice does it for me any time. I take fermented milk, once in a while, but I still don’t fancy it. If I were to take a sip of passion juice simultaneously with a sip of fermented milk, it would leave me with a very bad taste in my mouth. If the two were to be mixed, then I wouldn’t dare drink (Oh, yes, I don’t like milkshakes as well, weird, right?)
Now think of your favourite drink and your worst drink. Your worst drink can be as worse as poison. Now try taking them simultaneously, or try mixing the two. How far would you go? Let’s say you were to mix sewer waste with your favourite drink, would you take it? Why not? Try close your eyes and take it because your favourite drink is in the mix. Will you even stand the smell of it? I have also watched videos of what happens when you mix coke with milk. Those videos made me stop taking coke, I couldn’t imagine the two drinks even mixing up in my stomach.
How does this relate to our lives? Well your favourite drink is salvation. Jesus said when we drink of this water we shall never thirst again. The water refreshes, restores, heals and renews. Your worst drink is sin. Sin destroys, kills and steals from you. Trying to take both drinks is tiresome and at times disgusting. You may even get a stomach upset, especially when you mix the two. In the same way, trying to live a Christian life mixed with a life of sin is difficult; it causes you to be unstable. It is draining and tiresome trying to mix two lives in one.
God calls it being lukewarm; you have no idea whether you are enjoying the poison in the milk or the milk in the poison. It causes instability in everything as James 1:8 says ‘ A double minded man is unstable in all his ways’ a person who has been taking such mixtures risks being spewed up by God. Revelation 3:16 says “I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” Everyone needs to make a decision on which side to stand and be loyal to it. My prayer and desire is that you will choose to be on God’s side. That you will stop trying to mix salvation and sin: Darkness and light cannot fit together in the same room, light will always take over.
‘Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.’
