One of my favourite songs is by one Stacie Oricco; ‘Don’t Look at Me’. At first, I sang it for fun, without even thinking through the lyrics. But at some point it all made sense. A certain man of God that I adored and looked up to, did something very wrong. He disappointed me in a great way, I almost though all this salvation and faith is a hoax. I almost gave up on ‘church people’ then this song made sense.
The lyrics go:
‘Don’t look at me if you’re looking for perfection
Don’t look at me I will only let you down
I’ll do my best to point you in the right directon
But don’t look at me
No, no, no
Don’t look at me, look at Him’
How many times do we elevate human beings to God’s perfection. Expecting them to be what only God can be, and provide what only God can provide? The Bible is very clear ‘Only God is perfect; Only God is Holy’ (Matthew 5:48) He is calling us to be Holy and Perfect like Him. Not like our pastors and spiritual authorities. The Bible is also clear that God’s ways are perfect. ‘As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.’ (Psalm 18:30)
Today, don’t look at me for perfection, don’t look at any human being. We will only let you down. look to God, who never disappoints, never fails and never makes mistakes. Look to God who is your ever present help in times of need. Look to God who owns the earth and everything in it. Look at Him.
