I had heard clearly from the Lord, I needed to fast and pray concerning an issue. Fasting and praying I did. I also heard it clearly when I was to give towards a certain course, and giving I did. He instructed me to make a few changes in my life. I have. Well I don’t always obey, but, you know I try. There’s a season however, where I got everything twisted. I had done my part, done everything as the Lord instructed, then I sat down and thought, now its your turn Lord…
Picture this; a parent sends a child to the shop for some sugar. The child obeys with joy and runs to the shop and back with a smile, hands over the sugar to the parent and they both continue with their business. A few minutes later, the child comes to the parent barking orders. ‘Now that I obeyed you, its your turn! go to the shop and get me books. I need them now! for school’ or they even now ask for candy, insisting that the parent must buy on the basis that they obeyed earlier. This means, they only ran to the shop because they had their own demands.
Back to my story. Many times I have obeyed God with the wrong motive. As a tool to manipulate Him because I am secretly holding a list of things He needs to do once I complete His task. Lord, I fasted and prayed, so its your turn, you must open this particular door. Lord, I gave my tithe, now its your turn, I need a car. Lord, I have been diligently reading your word, now its your turn, you must bring that man my way, I mist get married this year. I got it all twisted. Just because I obeyed God does not equal me to Him. He does not obey me because I obeyed Him. He can still say ‘no’ after I have fasted for 40 days.
Why do you obey God’s commands? To arm twist Him and make Him do whatever you want? Or is it because He is God. Supreme and Lord over your life? Is it because you believe in Him and what He says and does, or is it because you think by obeying Him, He will love you more and things will go your way?
Obedience to God does not make you His fellow potter, you are still the clay! You are still the sheep! The clay does not give demands to the potter, the shepherd does not obey the sheep. Don’t get it twisted!
“Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker, those who are nothing but potsherds among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘The potter has no hands’?” Isaiah 45:9
There are so many blessings that come with obedience, so keep obeying. But make sure your motive is right, because God sees our hearts, He knows our motives.
May the Lord open our eyes to obey Him so that things go His way. To obey Him because He is God and He has the plan for our lives. To obey Him because we love and Honour. Him. To obey Him because of who He is. To remember we are the sheep, to remember we are the clay.

Me and the many times I got it twisted. Confession time for even now, I certainly try to manipulate Him – consciously or unconsciously.
Bitter truth.
