Do It Quietly

We are daily bombarded by public scandals: When we hear any bad news concerning people’s marriages, businesses, and life in general, we are quick to air it in public. We no longer privately correct people, instead we make it known that we are mad, we have to point fingers, crucify them and everyone must know.

Joseph had the option of humiliating Mary, after finding out she was pregnant before they were married. Before the angel appeared to Joseph, he was convinced that Mary was out of her mind. It was an impossible situation. It was not making sense. He could have humiliated her and exposed her for cheating on him and disobeying God. But he chose not to. “Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.” (Matthew 1:18)

To me, that is a sign of character and integrity. Even though he felt hurt and betrayed, he was not going to publicly disgrace Mary. He might have a right to because they were engaged, but He chose not to; because He was faithful to the law.

I pray that our love for God and His law will hold us back from humiliating each other publicly. That even when we have a right to, even when we have confirmed the sin they have committed, we will correct in a way to win them back to Christ and cover them with God’s love. May we be found to be people of character and integrity even to the strangers on the streets of social media. That we will not be quick to share, comment, and post things that are meant to bully and embarrass those around us. Even when we feel the need to be loud, may God help us to do it quietly.
