Christians Vs Christians

In the past week, there has been a social media fight between Christians who supported the suspension of church services and those who are against that directive. Well, this is all because of the corona virus pandemic in the nation. At first it was a silent war, everyone posted their opinion with respect and decorum, then the posts became sarcastic and slowly turned into hate speech. Those who suspended their services have been perceived as faithless Christians while those who chose to go to church have been called ignorant Kenyans. It is so sad that the majority of the people name calling and spreading the hate are Christians. In the morning they post a prayer and then in the evening they post a sarcastic comment about a particular ministry. Why are we fighting? Why are we so angry at each other? Aren’t we on the same team? Shouldn’t we be standing on one side fighting the pandemic in prayer?

I am reminded of the woman at the well. (John 4:22) She brought out the Jews and Gentiles preferred worshiping location feud. She said, “Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.” I see that woman today on social media either saying “Why don’t you stay at home and worship God?’ or ‘Church is our place of worship, we must go to church!’ She has even forgotten that her main need is water to quench her thirst. She wants to sort out the debate on the perfect place of worship. Then Jesus replied “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.  You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

Most of us need to hear that reply again. That God is seeking for true worshippers. True Worship goes beyond Sunday. It is our relationship with God Monday to Sunday. It is where God is in our priorities. It has humility, obedience and faith. God is not seeking for those who went to church; neither is He seeking for those who held their services online. He is seeking for true worshipers. The fact that He is seeking means that they are hard to find. They are not everywhere, they are few. My prayer is that you and I will be found as true worshippers. My prayer is that even in these times of uncertainty and pain, true worshippers will stand out.

It is not time for divisions. Let us seek for the blessing of protection and healing through unity. It is the best time to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth in all platforms around us. It is time for the world to see who our God is through our speech and deeds. Let us come together, Jews and Gentiles and pray, let us come together and look after the vulnerable in the society, let us come together on those platforms and sing songs of praise and worship. Instead of showing Christians verses Christians fights, let us show Christians verses hate and divisions by coming together. Let the true church arise. God is for us!
