I love watching the movie Jumanji, oh yes I know it’s not a Bible story acted out, but I could watch it over and over. To me, knowing that the characters are in a foreign land with different bodies and all they have to do is follow instructions and achieve a specific goal. Of course it is not easy, the obstacles are numerous and they only have three lives. The drama and the comedy is so captivating, especially knowing that they will definitely get to the end and go back home and back to their bodies. Watching with the end in mind helps me go through the motions brought by the obstacles they face: Without the ups and downs, there would not be a movie.
I often liken it to the children of Israel in the book of Exodus, they wandered their way to the promised land amidst many obstacles. They had been promised a land flowing with milk and honey, but the road to the land wasn’t easy, they had to go through a wilderness, the red sea and enemies. They also were terrified throughout the journey; they doubted their leader, murmured, complained, doubted God and even worshiped idols. Yet in every obstacle God provided a way out. He overlooked their rebellion and mistrust and asked for their obedience and trust. “The Lord will fight for you, you need only to be still.” Ex. 14:14
In this life we face obstacles day in and day out, we are often discouraged by the mountains and giants that seem to slow us down on our way to the Promised Land. When God gives us dreams and visions, He does not promise us a smooth ride, but He promises us His constant presence. All we need to do is to trust in His power as we walk through the valley of the shadow of death. We need to believe that God is all powerful and He knows what He is doing. The Israelites made it to the Promised Land, not because they were perfect, but because God is faithful to His promises. They had sinned in the wilderness, they had rebelled and complained, but God remained to be faithful. When obstacles cause you to sin, God’s promise remains the same; God is faithful to the end. He is our salvation, our deliverer and our redemption.
Today you may be facing obstacles in life, wondering if God has forgotten about you, wondering if His promises upon your life will ever come to pass. Be assured that God will part the red sea for you, He will provide manna for you. He will fight the enemy on your behalf. He will make a way even where there seems to be no way. He is asking for your trust and obedience. He is bigger than the obstacles you are facing and He has a plan through it. Today choose to focus on God, may His glory shine in that bleak and dark moment. May He glorify Himself through the obstacles you are facing.
