I cannot count the number of times my mother told me to be careful. In the kitchen while chopping onions and vegetables, I sometimes used to be very fast and she would say ‘be careful’. When visiting some of my friends, she would say ‘be careful’. When walking on a slippery floor, she would say, ‘be careful’. When carrying heavy loads on my head, she would tell me, ‘be careful’. She used this word because she cared. She did not want me to fall or get hurt. When someone tells you to be careful, they are literally telling you to be cautious. The Longman’s dictionary defines ‘be careful’ as ‘A phrase used to tell someone to think about what they are doing so that something bad does not happen’
In many instances, God, in His word tells us to be careful. Today I would like to remind you to be careful in three areas.
Ephesians 5:15-17 “Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” We live in a day and age where everyone wants to live the way they feel like. Everyone is busy fighting for their rights, even when they violate someone else’s. We find ourselves conforming to the patterns of the world, trying to be relevant and trendy. God’s wisdom is so unpopular and out of fashion. How we live should be a reflection of God’s wisdom; which is much needed in this generation. (Where foolishness is trendy) Today, take a pause and reflect on the decisions you make, look at your way of living, Are you living as wise? Be careful to.
Joshua 1:8 “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful” God commands us not only to read His word but to do what is written. I have heard many people talk about how they have read through the Bible ten times, how they read one chapter a day: Very good. However, there’s more required from us. That we do what the Bible says. Everyday we act, we speak, we think and we make choices. For us to be in line with God’s will and law, we need to be careful in all these. Today take a pause, reflect on God’s word, are you doing what it says? Be careful to.
Proverbs 13: 3 “Be careful what you say and protect your life. A careless talker destroys himself.” The Bible has warned us severally against having a lose tongue. We are told that the power of life and death lies in the tongue. Today we not only talk with our mouths but also with our fingers as we type and post online. God is reminding us today to be careful, because with our words we are either protecting our lives or destroying them. It is so easy to be swayed with current trends, we want to use those hashtags, we want our comments to trend, we want to outshine the people around us with our words. The devil is making sure that we are cursing, hating, gossiping and lying with our words. Today take a pause, reflect on your words, are you speaking life? Be careful to.
May the Lord help us all to be careful, in these and many other areas of our lives. Lest we fall and perish.
