I’ll say, “Yes, Lord, yes”
To Your will and to your way
I’ll say, “Yes, Lord, yes”
I will trust You and obey
When your Spirit speaks to me
With my whole heart I’ll agree
And my answer will be, “Yes, Lord, yes”
This song has been in my heart all day: An old hymn that I learnt as a child; way before I knew its meaning. You see, parenting has taught me the sting of disobedience. It pains differently when your child, whom you love so much, disobeys you. When you give and instruction and they do the exact opposite. Put in mind that most of the time, the instruction you are giving is for their won good. For example, when I tell my daughter to clean her room, my intention is to teach her responsibility: That’s her bed, when she goes to sleep a night, no magic will take place. She will find it exactly how she left it. So when she disobeys it hurts me, it also hurts knowing that if I make the bed for her, I will not be a good parent. Well, my mother should not read this one, I know how much my disobedience as a teenager frustrated her.
What if she says yes to all my instruction? What if she trusted that being her mother, I want the best for her and all I tell her to do is for her good? Life will be so easy for both of us. And the joy! Oh! Every time she obeys even the minor instructions, I am filled with so much joy in my heart. I am compelled to even love in her more and extend favours and grace upon her.
Now God desires that we obey His instructions. Its all written in the Bible: He did not leave us alone. We have the Holy Spirit, our helper; who daily whispers to us what to do. God’s intentions for us are to give us a hope and a future. His plans are good! Every instruction He gives is for our good. When He says Yes, its for our good. When He says wait, its for our good. When He says no, its for our good. What happens when we keep disobeying? Well, His love for us does not change, but we slow down our own progress. According to 1 Thessalonians 5:19, disobedience to God’s word quenches the Holy spirit. “Quench not the Spirit.” The sting of disobedience.
What if we chose to say Yes to God’s will. To keenly and intentionally follow His lead? The Bible says in Deuteronomy 11:1 that “Love the LORD your God and keep his requirements, his decrees, his laws and his commands always.” Yes ‘ALWAYS” remember whatever the Bible says is true, whatever God instructs is possible. Jesus also said in John 14:15 that “If you love me, keep my commands.” So do you love Him? Do you really love Him? Now go back and read the lyrics to the song I quoted with understanding.
May God grant us the grace to say Yes to His will. The grace to trust and obey.
