All Men Are Like…

I once made those harsh collective ‘all men are like…’ statements after some breakups: When one decides to judge an entire gender because of one or two people who disappointed them. I’m sorry that’s not what brought me here today. Well, I’m still talking about all men, but by ‘men’ I am not referring to gender but the human race, and again am not comparing us with any animal, but with grass.

“All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them. Surely the people are grass. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.” Isaiah 40:6-8 (Also referred to in 1 Peter 1:24-25)

This has been a year of tragedy for the entire world because of the covid-19 pandemic. A great reminder of how fragile life is. At such a time last year many people who have succumbed to the disease had plans for 2020. Just like you, they had dreams and desires and a list of things to do this year. But their lives here on earth have been cut shot. Many have left behind their families, their jobs, their mansions, their projects, their awards, education, their phones, their followers and likes, well, they have left behind everything. Even that which they held on to as important, things that maybe they thought they cannot live without. The pandemic has also claimed many lives, it has not just picked the poor, or powerless, it has claimed great rulers and wealthy people in the world.

Isaiah was instructed by God to cry out these words to the people, the people needed to know that they are neither invincible nor self-sufficient. We live in a day and time where technology has advanced to levels of fooling us that wed not need God. Man is boasting of discovering, creating and growing things each day forgetting that it is God who enables Him to do so. We are guilty of taking the glory that belongs to God and allowing the praises of men to fulfill us.  We forget how fragile our lives are, how quickly they wither like grass, how suddenly they fall like flowers.

The prayer I am making for you and I this morning is that God will teach us to number our days. Life is short, we are here today and tomorrow we are gone. No one is alive by their own power, so do not ignore the presence and power of God in your life. We should instead learn to trust and lean on God’s word which never fades, which stands forever. The only constant invincible truth is the word of God. Think about it, when you are dead and buried, whatever you are holding on to here on earth will no longer matter, the only thing that will matter is your soul. Feed your soul with God’s word. Remember, whoever believes in Him will not perish.
